First-year sweeps sabre competitions

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (January 23, 2024) – No. 5 Northwestern fencing recorded two dominant victories at the Philadelphia Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., while Alex Chen brought home a pair of first-place finishes as part of The Canada Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia.

After dropping a pair of tightly contested decisions to No. 9 Duke, 15-12, and No. 7 Penn, 14-13, Northwestern got back on track with a 26-1 rout of Drew that featured spotless 9-0 showings from both the foil and sabre squads.  The 'Cats followed that up with a 22-5 victory over Yale, receiving eight wins apiece in the aforementioned weapons.  Northwestern wrapped up its stay in The City of Brotherly Love with another narrow setback, falling by a 15-12 margin to No. 12 Yale.

On the individual front, Northwestern was led by Hanna Lipthay, Juliana Hung, Allison Lee, Levi Hoogendoorn, and Megumi Oishi, who each totaled seven victories.

Chen carried the banner for Northwestern internationally this past weekend, competing at The Canada Cup, a selection event for Team Canada.  The Toronto, Ontario native stormed to a clean sweep of both the Senior and Junior Women's Sabre titles, finishing with an unblemished record across pool action and in the tableau.  Chen has enjoyed a fast start to her debut campaign with the 'Cats, taking home the Division I Women's Sabre crown at the Remenyik ROC/RJCC this past October in addition to posting a 12-6 record in dual action.
