No. 1 Wildcats Romp No. 2 Boston College for the National Championship

5/28/2023 3:57:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

CARY, N.C. – The Northwestern lacrosse team is back on top of the sport. Combe Family Head Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller's No. 1-ranked Wildcats throttled No. 2 Boston College 18-6, capturing the program's eighth national title and first since 2012 on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate student attacker Izzy Scane cemented her legacy as one of the school's titans of sport by guiding Northwestern back to the pinnacle of the lacrosse world. Her score with 10:44 remaining in the game was one for the record books, as she set the school's career (288) and single-season (99) goal record on the same goal. The Clarkston, Mich. product earned tournament MVP honors and was joined on the all-tournament team by Madison Taylor, Erin Coykendall, Samantha White and Molly Laliberty.

Northwestern raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter behind the help of true first-year Madison Taylor, who scored the team's first two goals and finished the game with four. Since at least 2005, Taylor is the only first-year to tally four goals in the NCAA championship game.

Amonte Hiller moved into a tie with her former head coach Cindy Timchal for the most titles won by an individual coach (8).

QUOTABLES

Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller: The years after that run of championships, it was pretty challenging. I was pretty hard on myself, taking a lot of ownership. I was putting too much expectations on myself and on the team. At one point I just said, "I'm hitting the reset button." Completely resetting this program, going back to how I started it in 2005, that crew. Honestly, there's nothing more fun than when you get a big group of people to believe in the same thing. It was such a fun journey. I savored every single moment of it. I had absolutely so much fun.

Attacker Izzy Scane: To be a part of a group that was as phenomenal as our team was this year, I can't say enough amazing things about every single person on the team and the coaching staff and everyone involved with our program. It's been the most fun year of my life, and I wouldn't change it for anything. I'm very, very thankful that I chose Northwestern. It's really given me a sense of home and community. And now to be up in the conversations of teams that won National Championships under Kelly, it's just an honor. It's surreal. It hasn't really set in yet, but it's exciting.

Attacker Madison Taylor: When I came here, when I committed, all I thought about was, 'how we are going to win a National Championship?' That's really all I ever wanted. To dream of it as a kid and now being here is so surreal. I can't believe this is real right now. That's all I wanted. My dreams came true.

Northwestern University President Michael H Schill: Every day is a great day to be a Wildcat. But some days are even greater than others. Congratulations to the women's lacrosse team for winning their eighth National Championship today, after a dominating win over Boston College. Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller and her team represent the best of Northwestern – talented, tough and always striving for excellence.
