‘Cats Cruise Past Kansas State, Prepare For Florida Swing

Northwestern to battle South Florida, No. 7 Texas A&M in Sunshine State
EVANSTON, Ill. (February 22, 2023) – Northwestern women's tennis (4-4) looks to build momentum from a victory at home over the weekend as it heads south to Florida for a pair of matchups.
The 'Cats will open the two-match swing through The Sunshine State in Tampa, Fla. on Sunday, February 26 with an 11 a.m. (CT) clash at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. A daunting matchup against No. 7 Texas A&M at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla. on Monday, February 27 at 12 p.m. (CT) closes out the trip.
LAST TIME OUT
Northwestern started fast and never looked back, defeating visiting Kansas State, 5-2, this past Sunday at the Combe Tennis Center.
The 'Cats were able to secure the doubles point jumped out to an early lead with a 6-4 victory from Christina Hand and Justine Leong in addition to a 6-1 win from Briana Crowley and Maria Shusharina.
Northwestern kept rolling in singles action, with straight set wins by Crowley (6-3, 6-1), Kiley Rabjohns (6-2, 6-4), and Leong (6-3, 6-4) clinching a victory for the Wildcats before Shusharina (7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 11-9) added on to close the afternoon.
RANKINGS UPDATE
Northwestern finds itself ranked No. 63 in the latest NCAA Division I Women's Team Rankings, which were released on Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Wildcats were one of 11 Big Ten programs to appear in the poll.
On the individual front, Hand cracked the top 100 in the women's singles rankings, landing at No. 99.
LOOKING AHEAD
South Florida, which has dropped three straight matches to fall to 2-4 on the year, faces off against Stetson on Thursday before battling the 'Cats.
In the Bulls' most recent action, a 4-2 setback to North Texas, Laura Pellicer (won by retirement) and Cilona Walsh (6-4, 7-5) put points on the board.
After taking on South Florida, Northwestern heads to Orlando, Fla. for a matchup with Texas A&M at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus.
The Aggies, who are ranked No. 7 in the ITA Team Rankings, enter this week with an 8-1 record after suffering their first loss of year to No. 2 North Carolina last Sunday, 4-2.
Texas A&M's roster features four players ranked in the top 100 of the ITA Singles Rankings, a quartet headlined by No. 9 Mary Stoiana, who boasts a 5-1 record in dual action this season.
