Five Things to Know
- Saturday's matchup will be Northwestern's first against an HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) in program history. It will be the 13th matchup between a team representing the Big Ten Conference at the time of the contest and an HBCU institution. The first matchup between a Big Ten school and an HBCU opponent was in 2004 when Illinois defeated Florida A&M, 52-13. Northwestern is the eighth member of the Big Ten to face an HBCU.
- DL Anto Saka recorded a strip sack against Penn State and is now tied for second in the Big Ten with 3.0 sacks in his first collegiate season. Saka is the first Wildcat with 3+ sacks in the first five games of his career since Vince Brown did so in 2008.
- The 'Cats forced three fumbles in the first half against Penn State, including a fumble and recovery on the opening kick-off for the Nittany Lions' first turnover of the season. It is the first time the Wildcats forced three fumbles in one half since they did so in the second half of the 2018 Holiday Bowl against Utah.
- LB Bryce Gallagher has tallied 51 tackles in five games, the second-consecutive season that he has surpassed 50 tackles in the first five games of the season. Gallagher ranks third in the Big Ten and 13th in the nation with 10.2 tackles per game. He is the only player in the conference with 50+ tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Gallagher is the only player in the Big Ten to post 240+ tackles and 2.5+ sacks since the start of the 2021 season.
- WR Cam Johnson caught six passes for a team-high 85 yards last week, his most in a Northwestern uniform. Johnson ranks second on the team with 257 receiving yards in the first five games, his most yards through the first five games of a season since his 2020 campaign at Vanderbilt. Both Johnson and Bryce Kirtz are on pace to surpass 600 receiving yards this season. They would be the first Wildcat receiving duo to each reach 600 yards in the same season since Christian Jones and Tony Jones did so in 2013.
