No. 6 ‘Cats Enjoy Strong Showing At Philadelphia Invitational

Northwestern back in action Saturday at DeCicco Duals
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (January 26, 2023) – No. 6 Northwestern fencing battled a gauntlet of ranked opponents this past Sunday at the Philadelphia Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. The 'Cats impressed against a collection of the nation's best, finishing the event 4-2.
Northwestern got its stay at the event off to a fast start against No. 33 New York University, posting victories across all three weapons en route to a 20-7 victory. The sabre squad led the way with an 8-1 triumph.
After dropping a 22-5 decision to No. 3 Princeton, the Wildcats got back on track with wins over No. 17 St. John's, 19-8, and No. 11 Penn, the event host, 14-13. Northwestern picked up wins across the board against the Red Storm, while foil and sabre squads notched 6-3 wins to push the 'Cats past the Quakers.
In a showdown with No. 1 Columbia in its penultimate matchup of the day, Northwestern gave the Lions all they could handle, dropping a tightly contested 14-13 matchup. The foil squad turned in an impressive 6-3 victory, while the sabre group fought tooth and nail, dropping a narrow 5-4 setback.
The 'Cats closed out their stay in The City of Brotherly Love on a high note, edging out a 14-13 victory over No. 13 Yale in the day's closing bout. Spurred on by wins from the epee, 6-3, and sabre, 5-4, groups, Northwestern wrapped up a winning weekend to push its record on the year to 22-8 overall.
