
Wrestling Takes Down #14 Michigan State for Third-Straight Dual Victory

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Northwestern wrestling continued to impress in the back-half of its Big Ten schedule, earning a third-straight dual victory on Friday nigh at #14 Michigan State.
Six Wildcats picked up bout wins, with three earning bonus points (Ryan Deakin, Troy Fisher, Lucas Davison) on Friday marked just the third dual loss of the season for the Top-15 ranked Spartans team, with the other two coming to No. 1 Penn State and No. 7 Ohio State.
Michael DeAugustino opened the night strong for the 'Cats at 125 lbs, earning a 4-0 decision over Tristan Lujan in which he racked up over two minutes of riding time to secure the victory. DeAugustino improves to 6-1 on the year, and has won four-straight bouts against conference opponents.
Frankie Tal-Shahar continued his impressive run this season at 141 lbs, earning a dramatic sudden victory takedown over Matt Santos to secure a 3-1 decision. At 149 lbs, Yahya Thomas picked up a 5-3 decision over the Spartans' Peyton Omania to extend the Wildcat lead.
At 157 lbs, No. 2-ranked Ryan Deakin improved to 9-0 on the year with a second-period fall over #17 ranked Chase Saldate. It marked Deakin's third time picking up a fall in the nine bouts he's wrestled this season.
Troy Fisher continued to give the Wildcats bonus points at 174 lbs with a 12-4 major decision over Nate Jimenez to give Northwestern a 19-9 lead.
After Michigan State won bouts at 184 and 197 lbs to cut the lead to 19-16, Lucas Davison secured the victory with a decisive 19-4 technical fall over Brad Wilton. Davison now sits at 16-4 on the season and has won his last four bouts against Big Ten opponents, including back-to-back technical falls in the Wildcats' dual victories over Michigan State and Maryland.
Northwestern is back in action on Sunday for its final non-conference dual of the season vs. Northern Illinois, beginning at noon CT. Sunday's dual will be held at Treinen's Performance Center while women's basketball takes on Michigan concurrently at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Fans who buy a ticket will gain entrance to both events.
