Fencing Records Four Wins on Day One of Western Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Northwestern fencing team had a strong first day at the Western Invitational hosted by Air Force, posting a 4-1 record with wins over No. 14 North Carolina and No. 15 Stanford. The Wildcats lone loss came against No. 4 Harvard.
The team started off the day with a victory over NJIT. The sabre and foil squads secured the win with 8-1 and 7-2 victories respectively. Epee fought a close round, ultimately falling 4-5 to the Highlanders.
Next up, the 'Cats dominated Stanford with strong wins across all three weapons. The epee and foil squads set the tone with 7-2 victories each. The sabre squad was not far behind with a 6-3 victory.
In the third round, Harvard defeated NU 17-10 with victories over foil and sabre squads. The epee squad secured a win against the Crimson with a 5-4 victory.
In the afternoon, the 'Cats first faced off against Incarnate Word, where they put together their largest victory of the day with a score of 21-6. All three squads beat the Cardinals with sabre pacing the way at 8-1, followed by foil at 7-2 and epee at 6-3.
In the last round of the day, the 'Cats beat a tough North Carolina squad 15-12. Epee led the charge with a 6-3 victory, followed by sabre at 5-4, and foil fell 4-5.
Next up, NU faces off against Air Force, Columbia, and UCSD on Sunday, Nov. 6.
