Wildcats Win Twice to Cap Western Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Northwestern fencing team continued its winning ways on the second day of the Western Invitational with a 2-1 record. The Wildcats earned wins over Air Force and UC San Diego with the lone loss of the day coming against No. 3 Columbia.
Against Air Force at the start of the day, the 'Cats secured a 15-12 victory. The foil and sabre squads won 6-3 and 5-4, respectively. The epee squad fell 4-5.
Next up, the 'Cats faced off against Columbia and fought valiantly, but ultimately came up short in a 19-8 loss that was closer than the score reflected. The sabre squad paced the way for NU earning four victories over the Lions, followed by the epee squad who won three bouts.
In the third and final round, the 'Cats earned a 15-12 hard fought victory over UCSD. Winning two out of the three weapons, the team beat the Tritons foil squad 7-2 and epee squad 5-4. The sabre squad fell 3-6.
Over the course of the two-day event, the 'Cats finished with a 6-2 record to start the dual meet season. Northwestern will look to continue its winning ways when they take the strip at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday, November 13.
