CHICAGO – Northwestern battled for a 1-0 Chicago derby win over Loyola on the road Friday night.
Junior Eric Smits scored the winner in the 71st minute on a deft header off a cross from senior midfielder Bardia Kimiavi. Smits scored the first goal of his career while Kimiavi recorded the sixth assist of his career.
The Wildcats improved to 1-1-1 on the young season after their season-opening trio of Chicago rivalry road trips, and spoiled Loyola's perfect start the season, dropping the Ramblers to 2-1. The result was the second shutout in a row after the 0-0 draw with UIC on Monday.
Goalkeeper Miha Miskovic played all 90 minutes and earned the shutout, the 17th of his career. He was aided by a strong effort from the Northwestern backline, led by Juliaan Zighelboim, Deng Deng Kur, Jayson Cyrus and Alex Gordon.
Head coach Russell Payne earned the first win of his Northwestern career.
The Wildcats make their Martin Stadium debut on Monday afternoon, when they host UMKC for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Network+.
