CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 'Cats fell to Iowa, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
Bente Baekers managed to send one goal home against the Hawkeyes, bringing her season total 15. She was assisted by Christen Conley and Shannon Daley. Conley helped run the Northwestern's offense and defense like a well-oiled machine in her senior season, leading the team with eight assists and rivaled only by Alia Marshall with six.
Iowa got things rolling with a goal in the first quarter. Baekers found a response early in the second off a penalty corner from Daley. The Hawkeyes quickly regained their one-point advantage off a rebound and sent a barrage of shots towards the Northwestern goal. Annabel Skubisz held strong for the 'Cats coming up with seven saves on the day, for an impressive season total of 65.
The Wildcats struggled to maintain offensive possession coming out of the break and Iowa came up with another score. Northwestern came out aggressive in the final quarter, earning a penalty corner immediately. They were unable to convert and Iowa managed to hold off the Wildcat attack for the remainder of the quarter.
Northwestern will end the season with a 12-6 record with several stand out players receiving Big Ten recognition. Big Ten Freshman of the Year Maddie Zimmer finished out the season with four goals and an assist. Ana Medina Garcia and Peyton Halsey are just ahead of their first-year teammate with six and five goals respectively.
