EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern travels to College Park to take on Maryland this Friday. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on BTN+.
Friday marks head coach Russell Payne's return to his alma mater, Maryland, where he was an assistant for five years under head coach Sasho Cirovski. During his time as an assistant, the Terrapins won two national championships (2005, 2008) and compiled the best five-year win total in program history (83) en-route to five straight NCAA tournament appearances
Payne served as the Terrapin's starting goalie for four seasons (1993-96), totaling 22.5 shutouts and 340 saves during his career at Maryland.
The Wildcats (3-4-2) are coming off back-to-back wins against DePaul and Ohio State in which the 'Cats defense has been dominant, not allowing a goal in their past 217 minutes of play. Justin Weiss's 86th minute goal broke a scoreless tie to down the Buckeyes at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on Sunday.
Weiss looks to continue his three-game goal streak, which has catapulted him to a tie at the top of the Big Ten goal leaderboard.
Maryland is 7-1-1 on the season and unbeaten in their past four games. The Wildcats are 3-6-0 all time against Maryland, having last defeated them in the 2019 regular season, 3-1, before the Terrapins knocked Northwestern out of the Big Ten Tournament later that season.
