Norman, Okla. – A memorable 2019 campaign came to a close for Northwestern as they fell to No. 1 Oklahoma in the NCAA Super Regionals, 8-0.
The #B1GCats finished the season with a 47-13 record, the third-most wins in program history. Their 21-2 record in the Big Ten regular season marked the most conference wins in program history.
The 'Cats also notched a 20-game winning streak from March 29 through May 4, the program's longest winning streak since 1985. The list of regular season accolades helped earn head coach Kate Drohan the 2019 Big Ten Coach of the Year Award.
This year's Wildcats team helped Northwestern return to one of the most prominent softball programs in the country, headlined by the team being selected as a Top-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament and capturing its first NCAA Regional title since 2008.
Seniors Lily Novak and Morgan Nelson closed the book on two phenomenal careers at Northwestern. The 2019 Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree, Novak, started every game for the Wildcats at first base over the past two seasons and came up in the biggest of moments when the team needed her, including a 10th-inning walk-off homer against Wisconsin on April 13.
Nelson etched her name throughout the program's record books in multiple career categories–including 10th all-time in RBI (151), third in walks (119), eighth in doubles (36) and runs scored (141), along with a top-10 career on-base percentage. Against the Sooners on Saturday, the senior from Scottsdale, Ariz. singled through the right side in the first inning to extend her reached base streak to 34-consecutive games, the longest streak by a Wildcat batter since Marisa Bast in 2012.
With a single to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning, Nikki Cuchran extended her hitting streak to a career-high six-straight games. The first-year from Downers Grove, Ill. finished the year with 56 hits, the second-most on the team.
The Sooners took the lead with a double in the top of the first and added to it with four runs in the third inning along with solo homers in the final three innings. The Wildcats battled at the plate all game, but could not come up with an answer.
