ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Northwestern was swept by Michigan in a doubleheader on Sunday at Ray Fisher Stadium. The 'Cats dropped the first game, 3-2, and lost the second, 10-1.
Game One
The Wildcats got fantastic pitching efforts from Mike Doherty and Ryan Bader in the early matchup. Doherty started and tossed four quality innings, only allowing one earned run. Bader took over in the fifth and pitched the rest of the game, giving up just two hits and no earned runs over the final four frames.
Michigan jumped out to an early lead with a run in both the first and second innings, but Northwestern would tie things up in the third. Charlie Maxwell started the threat with a one-out double, one of his two hits in the game. After Jack Dunn bunted for a hit to advance Maxwell, Erro scored him on an RBI fielder's choice. Shawn Goosenberg kept the rally going with another double to drive in Erro and knot the scoring.
After a few innings dominated by the pitchers, the Wolverines broke through in the seventh with the game-deciding run. Christian Bullock walked and reached third when his stolen base attempt caused the ball to ricochet into center field. He scored on a ground ball that second baseman Erro couldn't handle.
The Wildcats would threaten in the final innings but failed to get the game-tying run across.
Game Two
Northwestern created a number of chances in the second game but failed to get clutch hits when they had men on base.
Ben Dickey led the Wildcats with a 2-for-2 performance, including driving in their only run with a single. Jack Dunn also hit well, reaching base three times and stealing a base in the leadoff spot.
Josh Levy pitched a perfect inning in relief, his sixth straight appearance without allowing a run.
Michigan jumped on the 'Cats right out of the gate, hitting two homers in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Northwestern would get one back in the fourth when Dickey's hit knocked in David Dunn from second. But the Wolverines kept their foot on the pedal and never let the 'Cats get any closer than three.
