'Cats Drop Series Opener at Michigan, 4-1
4/20/2019 7:36:00 PM | Baseball
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Northwestern fell, 4-1, to Michigan on Saturday evening at Ray Fisher Stadium.
Sophomore Quinn Lavelle recorded his sixth quality start of the season, tossing 6.0 IP while striking out six and only allowing two earned runs. The bullpen was also excellent with Sam Lawrence and Anthony Alepra both throwing scoreless innings in relief.
The Wildcats offense generated six hits, four of them doubles, but was unable to capitalize on the solid pitching effort.
Michigan's first three batters reached base in the first inning, including an RBI double by Dominic Clementi to give them an early lead. Lavelle looked like he was going to work out of the jam, but a throwing error by Shawn Goosenberg scored two more Wolverines.
The score remained 3-0 until David Dunn led off the top of the sixth inning with a double, his second two-bagger on the day. After a productive out by Alex Erro, Goosenberg knocked in Dunn with an infield single to tighten the game.
Northwestern's momentum was halted quickly when Michigan responded with a run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the frame. The 'Cats threatened in the eighth and ninth innings, but the score would remain unchanged.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action with a doubleheader against Michigan on Sunday. The day will begin at 11 a.m. CT with the second game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
