‘Cats Finish Strong at Day Two of NU Duals
2/3/2019 6:11:00 PM | Women's Fencing
EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 2 Northwestern women's fencing team concluded Day 2 of the Northwestern Duals in strong fashion, sweeping its slate of No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Princeton, No. 8 Duke, Caltech, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Cleveland State.
"I think our team showed great resilience this weekend," said head coach Zach Moss. "Coming back from two tough and emotional losses to sweep the competition today is no easy feat, especially against top level competition. This team continues to raise the bar for itself and our program."
Over two days of action, Northwestern went 9-2, including four wins over top-ten teams. NU's season record now stands at 36-3 with one duals meet and one individual competition remaining in the regular season.
Pauline Hamilton led all Wildcats with 11 wins, Sarah Filby and Maggie Snider contributed nine, and Jacqueline Hua, Amy Jia, and Alexandra Banin added eight apiece.
Northwestern began Day 2 with a tightly-contested match against eighth-ranked Duke. As the epée and foil squads tied with nine points apiece the match came down to the sabers, where senior Maddy Curzon's 3-0 effort pushed NU's saber squad to a 5-4 decision and 14-13 victory.
The Wildcats followed the narrow victory with a decisive one, defeating Caltech, 25-2, behind 9-0 sweeps from the saber and epée squads.
The #B1GCats went on to face a shorthanded, but sixth-ranked, Princeton squad. Northwestern won all nine of its foil bouts as Princeton was limited to just one foilist. That proved to be the difference, as NU held on for a 16-11 victory.
After the lunch break Northwestern entered a narrow matchup with No. 5 Ohio State. The epée and saber squads tied the score at nine, leaving the foilists to decide the match. With a well-placed touch to the torso, first-year Alyssa Chen broke the tie and won it for the Wildcats, 14-13.
The 'Cats concluded the two-day home meet with victories over Fairleigh Dickinson, 25-2, and Cleveland State, 26-1. Six NU fencers recorded 3-0 sweeps, including those by Jerrica Liao, Elina Moon, and Abby Tartell.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will travel to Durham, North Carolina for the Duke Meet next Sunday, February 10th.
