Wildcats Resume Season at Elite Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Northwestern women's fencing team was back in action this Saturday at the Elite Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The 'Cats closed out the weekend 1-5.
In the first away dual meet of the season, 'Cats faced Princeton, Penn State, Ohio State, Cornell, Harvard and Penn.
Sophomore Julia Falinska paced the Wildcats with nine wins. Foil fencers Sarah Filby and Alyssa Chen and sabre fencer Thea Nguyen were right behind Falinska with seven wins each.
To open up the weekend, the Wildcats went against Princeton and lost 20-7.
In the second round, Northwestern faced Penn State. Despite 2-1 efforts from Filby, Justine Banbury, Abigail Swallow and first-years Anna Biasco and Blodwen Bindas, 'Cats fell short, 15-12.
Next, 'the Cats fell short to Ohio State in a close match, 14-13. Foil went 6-3 and led the team in wins. Epee was a close second with a 5-4 record.
In the fourth round, #B1GCats went against Cornell and lost, 16-11. Sophomores Emma Scala and Swallow and first-year Nguyen each posted a 2-1 record.
In the fifth round, 'Cats clinched a 14-13 win against Harvard. 3-0 sweeps from Julia Shalansky, Falinska and Chen helped lead the Wildcats to victory.
In the last round, Northwestern fell short to Penn in another close match. Despite 3-0 sweeps from Filby and Falinska, the #B1GCats lost, 13-14.
"I'm very proud of how our team competed this weekend," said head coach Zach Moss. "While our record didn't end up where we wanted, we were in a position to win nearly every match. But, more importantly, our team was consistent in their approach to our process, team cohesion was terrific and spirits were high. Our team learned a lot this weekend and I look forward to seeing this group continue to grow."
Following the Elite Invitational, the 'Cats now hold a 6-5 season record.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is off for the remainder of 2019. The 'Cats will be back in action on Jan. 3 at the USA Fencing January NAC at Charlotte, NC.
Northwestern will resume dual competition on Jan. 12 at the Western Invitational.
