'Cats Fall in Double Overtime to No. 4 Maryland

10/3/2019 5:18:00β€―PM | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. – After a dramatic four quarters and two periods of overtime, Northwestern fell to No. 4 Maryland, 2-1, Thursday afternoon in front of a packed Lakeside Field.

The loss brings the Wildcats' overall record to 10-3 and 3-1 in Big Ten play. This was the 'Cats third top-five matchup of the season.

The Terps started off the scoring early, notching their first goal five minutes into the first quarter. Northwestern blanked Maryland's effort throughout the rest of regulation, shutting down six penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Florien Marcussen came up big for the 'Cats, tallying a season-high nine saves.Β

The game remained scoreless until senior defender Kirsten Mansfield tied it up for the 'Cats late in the fourth quarter. Mansfield knocked in a rebound off a penalty corner to send the Wildcats to overtime for the second game in a row and the fourth time this season.

Marcussen continued her dominance in net in the first period of overtime, recording a save off a tricky shot from Maryland. In double overtime, the Terps managed to tap one in, ending the game.

This win marks the eleventh game in a row that Northwestern has held their opponent to two goals or fewer.

The 'Cats continue play this Sunday in Newton, Mass. when they take on Maine. After playing Penn State and Rutgers, Northwestern returns to Lakeside Field on Oct. 20 to face Kent State.
