'Cats Drop Overtime Decision to No. 15 Fordham

9/3/2018 2:49:00 PM | Men's Soccer

MADISON, Wis. — Bardia Kimiavi scored his second goal of the season and Mattias Tomasino found the back of the net for the first time this year to help Northwestern take No. 15 Fordham to overtime, but the Rams scored the game-winner in the 96th minute to pull out the victory.

"We played very well for 70 minutes," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "We had a little bit of an unlucky break on the first goa thatl opened a crack in the door for Fordham. They are a veteran team and with their quality players they put us under a lot of pressure to get the equalizer and game-winner in OT. We will regroup tomorrow with a day off before taking on a tough Loyola team Friday on the road in the Purple Line Derby. I'm anxious to watch this group respond this week at training."

Northwestern (2-1-1) finished the Wisconsin Invitational with a 1-1 mark after topping Valparaiso, 1-0, Saturday evening. The loss to Fordham was NU's first setback of the year and moves the 'Cats to 0-1-1 in OT contests this season.

Fordham improved to 3-0-0 on the campaign.

Kimiavi put NU in front early by finishing off a pass from Richie Bennett in the 27th minute. The assist was Bennett's first of his career.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Tomasino doubled down on the Northwestern lead when he scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute.

Fordham finished regulation strong by scoring in the 68th and 83rd minutes. Fordham's goal in the 68th minutes was the first goal NU has allowed all season.

Bart Dziedzic scored the game-winning goal for the Rams in the 96th minute.

Northwestern returns to action on Friday, September 7, when it makes the short trip to Rogers Park to battle Loyola.
