EVANSTON, Ill. --
No. 14 seed Northwestern took care of business Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division I NCAA Women's Tennis Championship as it defeated Buffalo, 4-0, at Combe Tennis Center.

With the win, Northwestern advances to Saturday's second round where it will face Kansas State, a 4-3 winner in a thriller over Kentucky in the first match of the day.

Despite starting the match an hour after its announced time due to the length of the previous contest, the Wildcats came out ready to go.

"I thought we were ready to go," Northwestern head coach Claire Pollard said. "It's the NCAAs. If you're not ready now, you're never going to be. It was a little hard to concentrate and get the emotion correct after watching that great first match. I thought we did a really good job in doubles. We were really clean. We got off to some good stars in singles as well. I'm happy to get the victory."

The Wildcats were dominant in their wins. In doubles action, NU didn't surrender a single a game in either of the two matches that finished. At No. 3, the team of Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi rolled past Mercedes Rubio and Sanjana Sudhir, while the fourth-ranked team of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp won by the same score at No. 1 against Chantal Blanco and Lolade Ogungbesan.

Northwestern was nearly equally as impressive in its three singles wins. Doshi continued to thrive in her return to the lineup as she dropped only two games in her match at No. 4, defeating Arianna Aldrey 6-1, 6-1.

Moments later, Lee Or, who won the first 11 games of her match was able to close out a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Tanja Stojanovska, 6-0, 6-3, bringing the Wildcats within one victory of taking the match.

Larner had the honor of closing things out at No. 1 as the nation's 38th-ranked player finished off a dismantling of Chantal Blanco, 6-0, 6-1.

Northwestern and Kansas State will square off at noon Saturday with a spot in the round of 16 on the line. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at Vandy Christie Tennis Center with Combe Tennis Center serving as the backup location in the case of inclement weather. "What a great performance from Kansas State today," Pollard said. "They hung around and made it tough on Kentucky. We know they're going to push us tomorrow and hopefully we're going to respond."
