EVANSTON, Ill. –
No. 14 seed Northwestern is making a return to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship round of 16 after capping off a convincing weekend with a 4-0 victory over Kansas State Saturday at Combe Tennis Center.

With the win, the Wildcats (23-5) advance to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the 16 remaining teams will battle for the NCAA title beginning Thursday.

This is the 14th time that Northwestern has advanced to the round of 16 in Claire Pollard's 20 seasons as head coach and the first time since 2013.

Kansas State gave NU a battle in doubles play, but the hosts eventually emerged victorious. At No. 1, the fourth-ranked team of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp remained dominant as they took care of Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna, 6-3.

The other two remaining matches were very much up for grabs. However, Northwestern was able to close things out as Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi battled back at No. 3 for a 7-5 win over Maria Linares and Anna Turco, putting the 'Cats up 1-0 in the match.

Northwestern was nothing short of dominant in singles action, taking the first set in all six matches.

Lipp was the first Wildcat to close out her match, defeating Costamangna at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. Lee Or brought NU within one point of victory when she finished off Linares, 6-4, 6-0, in their match at No. 2.

From there, it was a race to the finish between Alex Chatt at No. 6 and Larner at No. 1. Both individuals had a match point at the same time and it was Chatt who closed out Turco, 6-2, 6-4, literally two seconds before Larner hit a winner that would have clinched her match.

Northwestern next will take on the winner of Saturday's match between third-seeded Duke and Oregon at 8 a.m. Central time Thursday in Winston-Salem. Each of the final four remaining rounds of the team tournament are being held on the campus of Wake Forest University.
