EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Big Ten title hopes face a challenge this weekend as the team hits the road for a pair of matches in the state of Michigan.
The Wildcats (13-4, 6-0 B1G) open by taking on Michigan State at 11 a.m. Central time Saturday before facing fellow conference unbeaten Michigan at the same time Sunday.
Following this weekend's matches, Northwestern has just four regular-season dual matches remaining.
Michigan State enters Saturday's contest with a 13-5 overall mark, including a 4-2 league record. NU defeated the Spartans in consecutive matches a year ago, winning 4-3 to close out the regular season April 23 in Evanston before earning a 4-1 victory five days later in the Big Ten tournament. The Wildcats have won all 37 all-time meetings with Michigan State.
The 13th-ranked Wildcats then will head to Ann Arbor to face off against No. 24 Michigan on Sunday. The Wolverines face a challenge on Saturday, hosting 11th-ranked Illinois whose lone Big Ten loss this season is to Northwestern, 4-3, March 2. Since opening the dual match season 4-8, Michigan enters play this weekend having won six straight matches, all in conference play to rank atop the Big Ten with the 'Cats. Northwestern holds a 49-11 advantage in its all-time series with Michigan.
The Wildcats are coming off a pair of convincing league wins last weekend, winning 6-1 at Maryland on Friday before blanking Rutgers, 7-0, at home Sunday.
Senior Erin Larner continues to pace the Wildcats with a No. 49 singles ranking while Maddie Lipp is No. 70 and Lee Or is No. 105. In doubles, Larner and Lipp team up for a No. 4 national ranking while the duo of Or and Alex Chatt are No. 28.
For Michigan, the doubles pairing of Brienne Minor and Mira Ruder-Hook is No. 67 while in singles Kate Fahey is No. 29 and Chiara Lommer is No. 95. Minor is the reigning NCAA Singles Champion.
