Northwestern Wraps Up 2018 Season

11/4/2018 4:05:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Matt Moderwell scored a goal in the 89th minute to force overtime, but No. 1 seed Indiana notched the Golden Goal in the 97th minute to top No. 8 Northwestern, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

Northwestern finished the 2018 campaign with 6-9-5 overall record.

"We gave everything we had and more," said head coach Time Lenahan. "Playing a top-ranked, eight-senior starter team on 24 hours rest was a great challenge and we were up to the task. A never-say-die attitude in the defensive end and a fantastic goal by Matt Moderwell put us with a chance to win the game. Full marks to Indiana, they are a great team and wish them well as they represent the Big Ten in the NCAA. Proud of our seniors John Moderwell, Braden Thuraisingham, Robbie White, Ben Miller, Jake Roberge, Emmett Gordon, and Camden Buescher. All left their mark on and off the field for this program. We will take a week off and then start getting ready for 2019 season.   With a young core, I am very excited about the offseason."

Both sides played scoreless soccer until the 80th minute when Indiana's Rece Buckmaster found the back of the net.

Northwestern answered as time was expiring when Julian Zighelboim sent a ball into the box where Jake Roberge headed it to the back post to M. Moderwell, who turned and beat the keeper to the far side to force overtime.

This was Northwestern's 10th overtime game of the season.

Indiana scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute to advance.

Miha Miskovic faced 27 shots in the effort and made five saves.
