EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern took on Penn State Saturday evening in a hard-fought Big Ten battle that ended in a draw after two overtime periods. Chicago's Big Ten Team outshot the Nittany Lions 14-9 in regulation but could not find the elusive game-winner, despite forcing the away goalkeeper into seven saves. The shutout was the seventh of the season for the Northwestern defense and goalkeeper Miha Miskovic, who notched four saves.
The tie moves NU to 4-5-3 on the season, with a 0-3-2 conference record. PSU moves to 2-6-2, with a 1-2-2 mark in Big Ten play.
Both sides were solid defensively early on, with neither team recording a shot until Ty Seager drove a strike over the bar in the 13th minute. Penn State came back with two of their own attempts shortly after, but the goalkeepers remained untested.
The 'Cats threatened once more in the 18th minute when Tommy Katsiyiannis received the ball 25 yards from goal. The sophomore beat the closest defender before firing a shot just wide of the post in what was the best chance for either team up to that point.
With three minutes left in the half, Mattias Tomasino notched the third shot on target for the hosts, who held the Nittany Lions without an attempt on goal in the opening period. NU led 6-5 in total shots at the break, with three saves from PSU's Josh Levine keeping the contest scoreless.
The second half began much like the first, with the first dozen minutes failing to see a shot on target for either squad. In the 58th minute, NU nearly broke through with a flurry of chances inside the Penn State box. Jose Del Valle turned a defender before shooting on goal from a tight angle, and the rebound fell to Bardia Kimiavi, whose shot was also saved at close range. The third ball came to Connor McCabe, whose shot was deflected onto the post and out for a corner kick.
In the 71st minute, Miskovic was finally called into action as the visitors tallied their first goal-bound attempt. The sophomore goalkeeper tipped the shot wide and collected the ensuing corner to end the threat.
With ten minutes to go, Katsiyannis put the Penn State backline under pressure once again as he weaved his way into the box before firing a low drive toward the near post. Levine made his seventh save of the match to preserve the 0-0 scoreline.
The hosts continued to search for a winner, tallying a shot in the final seconds of regulation, but it was not to be as the match headed to OT scoreless.
The overtime periods provided action on both ends, as a total of 10 shots were recorded between the two teams. Neither could find the breakthrough, however, as each would come away with a single point.
Northwestern will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 9, hosting DePaul in Evanston. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Martin Stadium.
