Wildcats Ready for Big Ten Championships

Northwestern will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for the championship meet
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern cross country team is back in action at the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska on the Mahoney Golf Course on Sunday, Oct. 28. The women's race is scheduled to go off at 10:45 a.m.
This year marks the first time Nebraska is hosting the Big Ten Championships since joining the conference in 2011. It will also be the first time that the Mahoney Golf Course has served as a championship site.
Head coach 'AHavahla Haynes discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by the Big Ten Championship meet as the 'Cats prepare to face off against six teams that are currently ranked top-25 in the country, including Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana and Minnesota.
"As we look forward, the goals are to position our one-six runners in the top 55 from the 1K forward," Haynes said. "Once they accomplish that part of the race plan, it is up to each woman to trust their individual plans. The nine toeing the start line on Sunday have had significant improvements in training over the last two weeks and they are coming on strong at the right time."
The 6K course will mark the third 6000-meter run for the Wildcats this season. At their last meet at NCAA Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin, the team finished in 15th place out of 34 teams. The 'Cats were led by juniors Aubrey Roberts and Sarah Nicholson who crossed the line in 20:10.0 and 21:20.9, respectively. Roberts finished in third place at the meet.
"On an individual level, Aubrey Roberts and Sarah Nicholson have been steady one, two finishers for us and we are looking for them to take their momentum into this weekend," Haynes added.
Last year at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, Northwestern finished eighth overall. Roberts earned First Team All-Big Ten Honors with her sixth-place finish at the championship meet.
The Big Ten Championship will be televised live on BTN Plus and will air on BTN on a tape-delayed basis at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, Oct. 29. Live results will also be posted at this link.
