EVANSTON, Ill. – Fresh off its best finish at Midlands in four years, Northwestern wrestling is set to travel downstate to face off against No. 14 Illinois at Huff Hall in Champaign, Illinois, on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT.
PRIOR RETURNS
Northwestern placed six wrestlers (attached and unattached) at the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, its most since placing seven in 2014. Redshirt first-years Sebastian Rivera (125) and Ryan Deakin (149) paced the NU cohort, both finishing in third place.
For Deakin, it was his second-straight year finishing in third place after doing so unattached in 2016. His path to victory included a 5-3 decision over former Wildcat Jason Tsirtsis in the consolation semifinals.
Rivera's only loss came by one point to Rutgers' Nick Suriano, ranked the second-best grappler in the nation at 125 lbs. Rivera also boasted wins over No. 7 Sean Russell (Edinboro) and No. 19 Zeke Moisey (West Virginia).
SUPER SEBASTIAN
Redshirt first year Sebastian Rivera (125 lbs.) has started his first season at a scorching clip, currently sitting on a 16-1 record. The last Wildcat grapplers to win at least 16 of their first 17 bouts were Pierce Harger (16 wins) and Jason Tsirtsis (17 wins) in the 2014-15 season.
BIG TEN BOUT
The Wildcats are 1-0 in Big Ten dual competitions so far this season after a 34-12 win over Maryland at historic Patten Gymnasium on Dec. 2. The 'Cats are 6-0 in all duals this season.
