Northwestern Takes Down Georgia Tech on Second Day of ITA Kickoff

1/28/2018 12:57:00 PM | Men's Tennis

NORMAN, Okla. – Northwestern defeated Georgia Tech Sunday morning in its second match of the ITA Kickoff event. The 'Cats took the doubles point and three singles matches to come away with a 4-1 victory.

Nick Brookes won in singles once again as the first year moved to 4-0 on the campaign, while Chris Ephron was triumphant in both doubles and singles on the day.

NU jumped ahead by taking the doubles point with the first two sets to finish. At No. 3 doubles, Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini dominated with a 6-1 victory. Dominik Stary and Ben Vandixhorn followed with a win at No. 1 over the Yellow Jackets' top duo to seal the point.

In singles competition, Brookes wasted no time in adding to his streak of wins in 2018. The rookie won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 to double the lead for the Wildcats.

At No. 5 singles, Jason Seidman helped Chicago's Big Ten Team pull away with a straightforward win over Michael Kay. The junior prevailed 6-3, 6-4 to put Northwestern just one point from clinching the match.

Georgia Tech got on the board with a win from No. 85 Carlos Divar as NU needed a victory from any of the three matches still in progress.

Ephron stepped up and provided the clutch win with a victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Daniel Yun in straight sets. Fresh off a success at No. 3 doubles, Ephron took the first set in a tiebreaker before cruising to a 6-3 win in the second.

The point gave the 'Cats a commanding 4-1 margin of victory, as matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles went unfinished for Stary and Vandixhorn. The win improves Northwestern to 2-2 on the campaign, as Georgia Tech drops to 3-3.

NU will remain on the road with a trip to Duke on Sunday, Feb. 4 up next. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT in Durham, N.C.
