'Cats Drop Big Ten Road Opener at Wisconsin

9/13/2017 10:54:00 PM | Men's Soccer

MADISON, Wis. — Junior Emmett Gordon scored the first goal of his career in the 41st minute, but it was not enough to overcome a three-goal deficit as Northwestern fell at Wisconsin, 3-1 in Big Ten action.

"We told the guys we were playing a veteran team with seven seniors coming off a tough loss playing at home," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "We knew Wisconsin would try to win the game in the first 20 minutes and we didn't defend well enough in the box during that time to keep them off the board. We never quit but three scores is a huge deficit on the road. I thought Emmett Gordon and Garrett Opperman both gave us a spark and glad to see Emmett rewarded with his first career goal. We will rest up tomorrow before getting ready for No. 1 Indiana on Sunday at home. I hope to see a big crowd with students being back in campus."

Wisconsin (2-1-2, 1-1-0 B1G) jumped out to a quick start, scoring all three of its goals in the first 20 minutes of action. Northwestern (1-5-0, 0-2-0 B1G) outshot the Badgers in the 90 minutes by a 12-11 margin.

Trailing 3-0, Northwestern earned a corner kick in the 41st minute. Junior Camden Buescher sent in a ball that first year Garreett Opperman headed off the crossbar. With the ball loose after it hit the bar, Sean Lynch attempted a shot towards net that was turned away and Gordon won the rebound, finishing far post to get Northwestern on the board.

Gordon, who came off the bench Wednesday night, provided a spark with four shots, three of which were on net in 52 minutes of play.

Buescher, Elo Ozumba and Tommy Katsiyiannis each recorded a pair of shots.

First year Miha Miskovic collected three saves.

Northwestern returns home to Martin Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 17, to host No. 1 Indiana.
