HAMILTON, N.Y. — Northwestern surrendered a pair of second-half goals Friday afternoon to fall at Colgate, 2-0, in the opener of the Central New York Classic.
Colgate improves to 1-2-0 on the campaign, while the Wildcats drop to 1-2-0.
"Colgate played very well tonight and you have to give them credit," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "That being said, we had a chance to tie the game in the 88th minute. Elo [Ozumba] earned the PK and had the confidence to step up and hit it. Unfortunately, it was saved and they countered immediately to get the second goal. We'll regroup and get ready for a top-10 Syracuse team on Sunday."
Following nearly an hour of scoreless play, Colgate found the back of the net off a corner kick in the 60th minute when Karl Brown put a shot to the near-right post that got by Francisco Tomasino.
Northwestern upped its attack following Colgate's goal and found a good opportunity to equalize in the 80th minute, drawing a foul just outside the box. Freshman Tommy Katsiyiannis took the free kick and sophomore Mac Mazzola headed it towards net, but was denied by Colgate's Peter Tappenden.
The Wildcats drew a penalty in the Raiders' box in the 88th minute, which set up Elo Ozumba for a penalty kick and the equalizer. Ozumba went to the left with his shot, but Tappenden guessed correctly and made the save.
Colgate took advantage of Northwestern's offensive press and scored a goal on a counter attack following the penalty-kick save.
Northwestern will continue on in the Central New York Classic on Sunday, Sept. 3, with a trip to No. 8 Syracuse. The Orange played Princeton to a 0-0 draw Friday afternoon.
