EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 36 Northwestern wraps up its regular season as it travels to No. 10 Michigan on Friday before returning home Sunday for a Senior Day contest against Michigan State.
Friday's match gets underway at 2 p.m. Central time while Sunday's contest is set to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
The Wildcats enter play this weekend in third place in the Big Ten standings at 8-1, one game behind both Ohio State and Michigan and one game ahead of Michigan State.
NU was in a three-way tie for first place until the 'Cats fell to the fourth-ranked Buckeyes at home last Sunday. The loss snapped a seven-match winning streak for Northwestern, including three consecutive in which it didn't surrender a point to its opponent.
Sunday's match will mark the final home match in the careers of Brooke Rischbieth and Jillian Rooney. Rischbieth has accumulated 71 doubles wins and 49 singles wins in her career, while Rooney has 62 victories in singles action and 37 in doubles.
Northwestern has three doubles pairings nationally ranked this week: Alex Chatt/Maddie Lipp (16), Rischbieth/Erin Larner (50) and Lipp/Rheeya Doshi (63).
Michigan, which will not face Ohio State in Big Ten regular-season competition, comes into Friday's match at 17-4 overall and 9-0 in league play. The Wolverines have won their last four matches, defeating Iowa 4-3 and Nebraska 7-0 last weekend in Ann Arbor. In singles, Brienne Minor is ranked No 24 while Kate Fahey is No. 25. In doubles, the team of Fahey and Alex Najarian is No. 9 and the duo of Minor and Mira Ruder-Hook is No. 58. Northwestern leads its all-time series with Michigan, 49-8.
Michigan State brings a 17-5 overall mark and 7-2 record against league foes into Friday's match at Illinois. The Spartans have won seven of their last eight matches, most recently topping Nebraska 4-0 and Iowa 5-2 last weekend in East Lansing. MSU's doubles team of Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen is ranked No. 75 this week. Northwestern's all-time record against Michigan State is unblemished at 35-0.
