SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 9 Wildcats wrapped up the NU Duals with another resilient day of fencing on Sunday, picking up their 30th win this season in South Bend, Ind.
Northwestern defeated North Carolina, Stanford and Cleveland State and dropped three close decisions against ranked opposition. The team finished the NU Duals 6-6 overall while facing elite competition.
Ella Lombard stood out in epee with a 8-1 record, while Stephanie Chan turned in an excellent performance in foil, finishing 7-2. Maddy Curzon, Abby Tartell and Alisha-Gomez-Shah all finished 6-3 in sabre.
Northwestern started the day with an 18-9 win over North Carolina. Lombard went 3-0 in epee as did Curzon and Cindy Oh in sabre.
The 'Cats fenced No. 8 Temple next, and despite winning the epee and foil groups, lost to the Owls 15-12. Chan posted a 3-0 record in foil and Mandeep Bhinder did the same in epee.
An even tougher foe awaited in the next round, and NU could not match fifth-ranked Penn State. Curzon and Pauline Hamilton both went 2-1 in the 21-6 defeat to the Nittany Lions.
The Wildcats got back on track against Stanford, and decisively won 18-9. Lombard, Oh, and Gomez-Shah all went 3-0 in the victory.
In the highly anticipated rematch from last week's DeCicco Duals, Northwestern fell short of Notre Dame in a 17-10 loss. All three weapon groups were tightly contested and Hamilton, Gomez and Chan all were 2-1.
The 'Cats closed out the two-day home meet by dominating Cleveland State 23-4. Tartell, Julia Abelsky, and Sacha Bazzal posted perfect records in a 9-0 sabre rout.
The #B1GCats are back in action next weekend when they travel to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Duals. They close out February with the USA Junior Olympic Championships and the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships.
