
Wildcats Continue Regular Season With Split Home-Away Matches

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern gets back into the flow of the regular season after a weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with an away-home weekend split.
The No. 13 Wildcats (10-3) play at Notre Dame (7-3) on Friday at 5 p.m. before returning home on Sunday to face No. 8 Oklahoma State (8-3) at noon and UIC (3-3) at 6:30 p.m. Both of those matches will be played at the Combe Tennis Center.
Chicago's Big Ten Team sits at 10-3 and No. 13 in the country. The 'Cats got off to the best start in program history at 10-0 but lost all three of their matches at the ITA Indoors in close fashion to No. 12 Oklahoma State (4-2), No. 14 Oklahoma (4-3) and No. 16 Mississippi State (4-3). Northwestern is led by Strong Kirchheimer, who is ranked No. 28 in the nation and has a 7-3 record at the No. 1 singles spot. He is 16-7 overall. Konrad Zieba entered the national rankings this week at No. 40. He is on an 11-match winning streak and is 13-4 overall.
Series History
Notre Dame leads the all-time series with Northwestern, 43-39. The teams have met in every season dating back to 1998-99. The Wildcats and Fighting Irish have split the last four meetings, with the 'Cats taking a 6-1 decision at home last season.
Northwestern and Oklahoma State had only ever played once before, in 1988, but will now meet for the second time in as many weeks. This weekend's match was already on the schedule before the two teams were paired up against one another in the first round of the ITAs last weekend. The Cowboys won a thrilling match, 4-2, to set the stage for Round Two in Evanston on Sunday.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is 19-0 all-time against UIC. Northwestern and the Flames have played in nine straight years with the Wildcats giving up just one team point during that span. Northwestern won 4-0 last season.
