'Cats Topple Illini In Big Ten Opener, 6-1

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 23 Northwestern notched its 17th consecutive win over Illinois Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 6-1 victory at Combe Tennis Center in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
The Wildcats had little trouble in doubles play as they captured the point to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 1 the 15th-ranked team of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp downed Louise Kwong and Ines Vias, 6-2. The pairing of Erin Larner and Brooke Rischbieth rolled by the same score at No. 3, defeating Alexis Casati and Daniela Pedraza Novak.
Northwestern kept things going into singles play where it won the first set in five of the six matches. Chatt put together a dominant performance at No. 5, rolling to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniela Pedraza Novak, putting the 'Cats up 2-0 in the match.
Larner and Lipp also were winners in straight sets for the Wildcats. At No. 2, Lipp finished off Alexis Casati for a 6-0, 7-5 win before Larner clinched the match for NU with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 over Louise Kwong.
Lee Or worked three sets in notching a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 triumph over Jaclyn Switkes at No. 4 to make the match score 5-0 in Northwestern's favor.
Illinois managed to get on the board with a third-set super-breaker win by Grace Tapak at No. 6. The matchup at No. 3 also went to a super-breaker where Rheeya Doshi prevailed over 97th-ranked Madie Baillon, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 1-0 (8).
Northwestern (5-4, 1-0 B1G) returns to action March 4 and 5 when it travels to Seattle to take on Oklahoma State and Washington, respectively.
