CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The trend of exciting matches between two really good teams continued on Sunday, but Northwestern again dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker, this time to No. 16 Mississippi State in the final match for both teams at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at The Boar's Head Sports Club.
The seventh-ranked Wildcats (10-3) end the weekend with close losses to No. 12 Oklahoma State (4-2), No. 14 Oklahoma (4-3) and No. 16 Mississippi State (4-3), each of which came down to the very last points of the last remaining matches.
This time, instead of having to mount a comeback like the first two days, the Wildcats held a 3-1 lead, but Mississippi State came roaring back to win the match when No. 3 ranked Nuno Borges beat No. 25 Strong Kirchheimer in a great match at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Before that, Jason Seidman had a chance to clinch for the 'Cats at No. 6, but his opponent, Trevor Foshey, erased a 5-4 deficit in the second set to win 7-5 and secured a narrow 6-4 edge in the third and decisive frame to get the crucial tying point for the Bulldogs.
Northwestern won a close doubles point on Sunday with wins at the second and third spots. Kirchheimer and partner Dominik Stary got the day started with a 6-1 win at No. 2, already their 11th victory of the season. The 53rd-ranked duo of Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire dropped a close decision to No. 44 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey at No. 1, 6-4, before Ben Vandixhorn and Chris Ephron edged out a win at No. 3 to clinch the match's first point, 7-5.
The Bulldogs' Braun beat out Vandixhorn to start singles at No. 5 to tie the team score at one.
Konrad Zieba continued his masterful play, beating Mate Cutura at No. 2 in straight sets for his 12th win in a row. Zieba is now 14-4 overall and 12-1 in dual play. Freshman Dominik Starý followed suit with a straight sets win at No. 4 to put the Wildcats up 3-1.
The Bulldogs then rattled off wins at Nos. 3, 6 and 1 to finish the match.
Chicago's Big Ten Team has a busy weekend next weekend, beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 when it travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame. The 'Cats then return home on Sunday, Feb. 26 for a rematch with Oklahoma State at noon before finishing the weekend with UIC on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
