EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern hosts Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 15, in a return to Big Ten action following three nonconference matchups. Kickoff is set for noon at Martin Stadium and the Big Ten Network will carry the action.
The Wildcats are looking to continue their recent success and enter the match on a two-game win streak. Northwestern topped Western Illinois, 3-2, on Monday, before shutting out DePaul, 2-0, on the road Wednesday. Camden Buescher has sparked the offense with two goals and two assists in the last two contests.
Rutgers enters the match with a record of 3-9-1 overall, including an 0-6-0 mark in Big Ten play. The Scarlet Knights beat NJIT, 2-0, on Wednesday evening in their last appearance.
Northwestern enters Sunday's match with the 27th-ranked strength of schedule in the country, while Rutgers boasts the toughest strength of schedule among Division I programs.
Sunday will be the fifth all-time matchup between the two teams, with all five coming in the past four seasons. NU prevailed, 2-0, in the first meeting before Rutgers beat the 'Cats twice in 2015.
Last season, Northwestern won, 2-1, on an overtime goal from Mattias Tomasino.
Last time out, Chicago's Big Ten Team took down DePaul Wednesday evening for its fourth nonconference win of the year. Early in the second half, Buescher scored a penalty kick for the second straight match to give the visitors a lead. Mac Mazzola tallied his second goal of the season on an assist from Drew Viscomi to seal the win.
Francisco Tomasino got the start in goal and played the full 90 minutes. The senior captain made four saves and picked up his first shutout of the campaign.
Northwestern will follow up the Rutgers match with two more home contests. After hosting Loyola on Oct. 24, the Wildcats will finish out the regular season at Penn State on Oct. 29.
