MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – Second-seeded Northwestern advanced through to the Big Ten tournament semifinals with a 4-1 victory over Purdue in the quarterfinal round Friday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The 13th-ranked Wildcats (25-3) beat No. 53 Purdue for the second time this season with strong play at the top of the lineup. Northwestern picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and led at No. 1 in a battle of ranked opponents.
Strong Kirchheimer made quick work of his match at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ricky Medinilla. The 75th-ranked Kirchheimer won his 27th match of the year. 15 of his 21 dual wins have come in straight sets.
No. 40 Sam Shropshire followed that with his own straight set win at No. 2 over No. 97 Benjamin Ugarte. Shropshire has won seven matches in a row and remains undefeated against Big Ten opponents.
"It provides a lot of momentum when the top of the lineup performs like they did today," head coach Arvid Swan said. "Purdue is an excellent team, and we just gave a great effort today."
Purdue got a win at No. 4 to get its lone point of the match, but Alp Horoz put things away with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Northwestern will face either No. 17 Illinois or No. 39 Penn State in the semifinals.
"We are excited for the opportunity tomorrow," Swan said. "We will prepare like we have done for every match this year and compete at a high level."
Northwestern won the doubles point for the 23rd time in 28 tries this season with two-point wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Shropshire and Konrad Zieba won 6-4 at No. 2 to run their record to 16-4, while Kirchheimer and Fedor Baev picked up their 18th win of the year with a 7-5 decision at No. 1 that clinched the first point for the Wildcats.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is 23-0 this year when it wins the doubles point.
