UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Northwestern set a new program record with its 24th win of the season after beating Penn State, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.
The 14th-ranked Wildcats broke the previous mark of 23 set in 1983.
"Breaking the school record for wins is a significant accomplishment," head coach Arvid Swan said. "The team works so hard on a daily basis to be prepared for every match and has competed so well in every match to break the record. We want to continue to build on our record with wins in the postseason."
Chicago's Big Ten Team finishes the 2016 season with a 24-3 (10-1) record. The team clinched the No. 2 seed for next week's Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn.
Northwestern handed No. 39 Penn State its first home loss of the season a match after the Nittany Lions upset No. 15 Illinois. The Wildcats used the doubles point to gain the early momentum and swept through singles for the record-breaking win.
The Wildcats won a tightly contested doubles point with a tiebreak win at No. 2 by the 88th-ranked team of Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire. Alp Horoz and Mihir Kumar got things started with a 6-3 win at No. 3, their 18th of the season. The win moved the duo into sixth place on the single season wins list at Northwestern.
Shropshire, the 41st-ranked singles play, moved right through his match at No. 1 singles with a straight set win to put Northwestern up 2-0. It was his sixth win in a row and 17th overall.
Penn State used wins at Nos. 4 and 5 to tie things up at two before No. 16 Konrad Zieba won in straight sets at No. 2 for his 21st win of the year.
Strong Kirchheimer then closed the match out with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. The win was Kirchheimer's team-leading 26th of the year.
