EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's tennis heads to Ithaca, N.Y. for a pair of matches against top-60 national competition this weekend.
The 21st-ranked Wildcats match up against No. 50 Rice on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. CT before playing the host school, No. 60 Cornell, on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Last Time Out
Chicago's Big Ten Team grabbed a couple of high-profile wins, beating then-No. 35 Notre Dame at home by a 6-1 score before traveling to Durham, N.C. to take down the 24th-ranked Blue Devils, 5-2. Sam Shropshire and Strong Kirchheimer each won both of their respective singles matches to lead the way for Northwestern.
The Wildcats
Kirchheimer has jumped out to a 4-0 record in dual play and is 10-2 overall. He is ranked 55th nationally according to the preseason ITA poll. The next individual player rankings come out next Wednesday.
He is joined in the singles rankings by Konrad Zieba (No. 16) and Sam Shropshire (No. 50). Kirchheimer and Fedor Baev make up the 52nd-ranked doubles tandem, and Northwestern remained at No. 21 as a team overall for the second straight week.
In five wins so far this season, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 23-4.
History
Northwestern is 1-3 all-time vs. Rice. The Owls won a 4-1 decision on their home courts last season. The Wildcats last won in 2014, a 4-0 decision at the Combe Tennis Center.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is 3-0 vs. Cornell. The teams have played each of the last two seasons with the Wildcats outscoring Cornell, 8-2.
Scouting Rice
The Owls are off to a 5-0 start this season but Northwestern will be the first ranked team they have faced. All of their matches have been played at home. David Warren, Henrik Munch and Jake Hansen all bring undefeated marks into the weekend at several singles positions, while Tommy Bennett is 3-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Scouting Cornell
Cornell is 1-3 and in the midst of a three-match losing streak. The last two have come at the hands of Big Ten opponents Michigan and Iowa. Stefan Vinti leads the way with a 3-1 record at No. 5.

The Wildcats are back at home on Saturday, Feb. 13 when they host No. 49 Kentucky at 1 p.m.
