ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a battle of top-20 teams, 100 minutes wasn't long enough to determine a result as No. 10 Northwestern eventually was edged 3-2 by No. 17 Stanford in a penalty shootout. The Cardinal out-scored the Wildcats 2-0 in the shootout.
Northwestern got on the board first in the third minute when Dominique Masters scored off a penalty corner with Isabel Flens assisting on the play.
Neither team mounted much of an attack in the opening half as the goal by Masters was NU's lone shot of the opening stanza while the Cardinal notched only two shots.
The action opened up a bit in the second half with Stanford eventually tying the game on a goal by Emma Christus at 46:31.
The Wildcats would regain the lead at the 53:58 mark when Elena Curley tallied a goal for the second consecutive day, putting Northwestern in front 2-1.
Stanford earned a penalty stroke opportunity at 58:46 and Fran Tew converted to tie the match.
The contest would remain scoreless through the remainder of regulation as well as two overtime sessions, eventually sending the contest to a shootout.
However, Northwestern was unable to cash in on any of its attempts while Millie Stefanowicz and Tew scored for the Cardinal to give Stanford the win.
The Wildcats will be the No. 4 seed for next week's Big Ten tournament in College Park, Maryland. Northwestern will open up against fifth-seeded Iowa in the quarterfinal round at 4:30 p.m. Central time.
