Tashima Named MVP as Northwestern Sweeps Milwaukee
9/20/2015 4:05:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Gabrielle Hazen led the way with 13 kills and classmate Taylor Tashima chipped in 37 assists as Northwestern cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Chicago's Big Ten Team (8-3) won the Wildcat Challenge with wins over Lipscomb on Friday and Sunday's sweep of Milwaukee.
"The wins are a result of us taking care of our process, and getting better," head coach Keylor Chan said. "We've just been focused on really improving every day [and] every time we get to touch the volleyball."
Milwaukee jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but the Wildcats clawed their way back to tie things up at nine. Hazen led the charge with six kills, and the Wildcats closed on a 15-3 run to take set one from Milwaukee.
The second set began with three straight aces from senior Abbie Kraus as the Wildcats jumped out an early lead. Kraus would go on to serve four aces in the match, tying her career-high and giving her a new season best for the 2015 campaign.
The Panthers would close the gap midway through the second set, but Northwestern hung on for a 25-19 victory. The third set began in Milwaukee's favor as the Wildcats fell behind 12-4 before starting on the comeback trail.
Northwestern came all the way back for a 25-21 victory and a three-set sweep over the Panthers.
Chan said he was impressed by his team's defense around the net with the Wildcats tallying nine blocks behind five from Hazen and four from junior Kayla Morin.
"We've definitely improved our blocking, which is something we worked on from Friday to now," Chan said. "Our servicing got a little shaky and that really put us in a bad situation. But then we just defended like we're capable of and I think that's obviously what got us back in the match."
In addition to winning both matches they played in the 2015 Wildcat Challenge, Northwestern took home a little hardware as well. Tashima was named tournament MVP, while Maddie Slater and Caroline Niedospial were selected to the all-tournament team.
The win gives Northwestern an 8-3 non-conference record with Big Ten play set to begin next week. The Wildcats will travel to Piscataway, N.J. for their conference opener against Rutgers and play the next four on the road.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on October 9, when it will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a match beginning at 7 p.m.
