Wildcats Dominate FAU FUN Invite

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Northwestern notched a first-place finish on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in South Florida, as they dominated the competition at the FAU FUN Invite at the Florida Atlantic Aquatics Center.
The 'Cats started the morning with a 1-2-3 finish in their first 100 medley relay of the season, as the quartet of Jackie Doyle (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley), Julianne Kurke (Atlanta, Ga./Parkview), Maddy Sims (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove), and Katherine Senseman (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South Vigo) took home first place.
After notching a 'B' cut last time out in the 200 free, Annika Winsnes (Singapore/United World College) took home a first place finish with a time of 1:52.04. Behind her, Aja Malone (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) swam a season-best third-place time of 1:55.05. Sydney Modeas (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) and Megan Purdy (Boulder City, Nev./Boulder City) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Northwestern continued their hot start with another 1-2-3 finish, this time in the 50 back. Lacey Locke (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Melissa Postoll (Acworth, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain), and Doyle took home the first three spots.
Another first-place finish escaped the Wildcats in the 50 breast, but NU captured the 2-5 spots as Kurke, Lindsay Adamski (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), Mary Warren (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), and Katie Branch (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors) had strong finishes for the 'Cats.
However, the #B1GCats got back to their winning ways in the 100 fly, as Sims registered a first-place time of 56.80. Alex Grimes (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) took home a third-place time of 57.74. Emily Launer (DeKalb, Ill./Rosary) and Georgie Pettibone (Santa Rosa, Calif./Analy) finished in sixth- and eighth-place, respectively, in their first 100 fly swims of the season.
The Wildcats finished 1-2-3 in the 50 free, with Winsnes taking home her second first-place in as many competitions. Julia Pratt (Vincennes, Ind./Vincennes Rivet) finished in second (24.47) and Senseman in third (24.90). Anna Keane (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) also swam in the 50 free, turning in a 7th-place time of 25.64.
After a break for diving competitions, NU came back and put three teams in the top five in the 200 free relay. The 'A' team (Warren, Pratt, Sims, Winsnes) for the 'Cats came in at a first-place time of 1:37.05.
Winsnes came back out and notched her third-straight first-place finish, this time in the 200 free with her 50.79 swim. Malone took home third place (54.24), Postoll took home sixth (54.68), and Branch took home 10th (57.10).
After registering a first-place finish in the 50 back, Locke returned to notch a first-place finish in the 100 back (57.56). Behind her, Annika Kollevoll (McLean, Va./The Bolles School) and Doyle took home fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the 100 breast, Northwestern won the 3-6 places, as Peyton Greenberg (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) led the pack with her 1:06.20 swim. Right on her coattails, Kurke swam a fourth-place 1:06.30, Adamski swam a fifth-place 1:06.30, and Pettibone swam a sixth-place 1:08.71.
The 'Cats put a strong foot forward on the distance free front, as four Wildcat swimmers finished in the top six. Lauren Abruzzo (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) swam a first-place time of 5:02.06, Modeas came in third (5:09.56), Purdy placed fourth (5:10.33), and Launer wrapped up the NU finishers in sixth (5:11.63).
Pratt put on a dominating performance in the 50 fly (26.09), finishing strokes ahead of the next-closest swimmer in the 'A' heat en route to a first place finish. Three more Wildcats finished in the top five: Sims had a second-place time of 26.32, Malone swam a fourth-place time of 26.81, and Doyle turned in a fifth-place time of 27.68. Chelsea Soderholm (Madison, Wis./Madison East) also made her season debut in the event.
Toward the end of the meet, the swimmers participated in a flipped 100 IM, and Grimes and Postoll finished 1-2. Greenberg and Abruzzo also swam, finishing in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Wrapping up the meet, Northwestern's two relay teams took home first- and second-place in the 400 medley relay with times of 4:01.96 and 4:09.15, respectively.
After some more time off for winter break, the Wildcats are back in action at Notre Dame on Saturday, January 16. The dual meet will begin at 11 a.m. CT.
