2009 NCAA Fencing Championships Final Results
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Northwestern senior foilist Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) finished off her storied Wildcat career the same way she started it - as an All-American. Nemecek finished sixth at the NCAA Fencing Championships on the campus of Penn State, the highest placing of her career, leading the Wildcats to a seventh-place finish among the women and 12th overall.
Nemecek, who took home the Midwest Conference Championship title and finished second at the NCAA Midwest Regional, posted 17 victories during the NCAA Championships, giving her 430 for her Wildcat career - tops all-time. She was named a second-team All-American in each of her previous three seasons, and finished in the top-10 in the nation every season (seventh as a junior, eighth as a sophomore and freshman).
Freshman Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) capped off an impressive inaugural campaign for the Wildcats, placing 13th at the NCAA Championships with 11 victories, upping her win total to 58.
In the epee, junior Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) wrapped up another All-American honor, finishing seventh with 17 victories over the three-day event. She was joined by her sister, Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll), who placed 20th with six victories. The two have combined for 450 victories during their time in Evanston, and look to be the anchors of the Wildcat team next season.
Junior Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) also capped a breakthrough season with a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. White notched six victories over the three-day tournament, upping her career total to 139 as she also looks to be one of the team leaders come next year.
NU finishes seventh in the women's division for the second-straight year and notch its 10th-straight top-10 finish. Northwestern's 12th-place overall finish comes despite the fact they did not have a men's team competing, as the Wildcats finished one point back of 11th-place Duke and 10 points behind 10th-place Yale, both of which were represented by both men's and women's teams.
