No. 18 Northwestern in Sixth at Big Ten Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 18 Northwestern slipped a spot to sixth place following the second day of action Friday at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Wildcats have 292 points, 50 better than seventh-place Wisconsin and 44.5 points behind fifth place Purdue. Michigan continues to lead the meet by a huge margin, holding a 140.5 point advantage over second place Indiana with a total score of 742.5.
Friday morning preliminary action at the Big Ten Championships:
Northwestern qualified a trio of Wildcats for finals scoring heats during preliminary action Friday morning at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
In the first event of Friday morning's events, freshman Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) swam an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying standard of 3:52.88 in the 400 IM to qualify for the consolation final in 11th place overall. Classmate Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) turned in a collegiate-best effort of 3:58.40, but his No. 24 finish overall finish was not enough to earn a spot in the evening's heats.
Senior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) began his quest to become the first swimmer in conference history to notch four championships in the 100 fly with a season-best and NCAA `A' cut of 46.38 to qualify No. 1 overall in the preliminary heats.
Five Wildcats finished between the No. 20 and No. 27 spots. Sophomore Bryan Pinkston (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) turned in a career-best 49.00 in the prelims, narrowly missing out on the points with a 20th-place finish, .3 of a second out of the No. 18 position. Senior Charlie Cunnick (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport Central) had a career-best 49.09 to take 22nd and senior Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) swam a 49.24 to end up 23rd. Freshman Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) was 25th with a 49.28, while senior Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) also had a career-best effort with a 49.42 to end up 27th.
Junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) took third overall during prelims to make the championship heat of the 200 free, swimming a season-best and NCAA `B' provisional standard of 1:36.39. Freshman Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) dropped two seconds off his seed time with a 1:39.46 to become Northwestern's next top finisher in 27th place.
Northwestern's top breaststroker, John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Brophy College Prep) finished in the No. 23 spot during the 100 breast with a season-best 55.92.
A pair of Wildcats finished just outside the points during the preliminary heats of the 100 back, with sophomore Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) swimming a 50.28 to take 20th and junior Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) right behind him in the No. 21 position after a swim of 50.33.
On the 3-meter diving board, junior Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) qualified ninth for the finals with a 319.55, while senior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) also secured a spot in the finals with a 12th-place score of 302.75.
Friday night's finals action at the Big Ten Championships:
Northwestern began Friday's finals with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay, getting an NCAA `B' standard of 1:27.92 from Vogel, Franklin, Bubolz and Barbic.
Tyler then took 12th overall with a sixth-place finish in the consolation final of the 400 IM, turning in a 3:55.44 for the 'Cats.
While he was fastest during prelims, Bubolz ended up third in the 100 fly during the championship heat with an NCAA `A' cut of 46.57. Indiana's Ben Hesen won the event with a 46.38, the identical time Bubolz swam during morning action.
In the 200 free, Nilsson slipped one spot to fourth during the championship heat with a season-best time of 1:36.21 after qualifying No. 3 overall.
On the 3-meter board, McIntosh turned it on in the finals with a score of 335.45, more than 32 points better than his preliminary tally to finish 11th for the 'Cats. Kiaie notched a 319.25 that was nearly identical to his score of 319.55 in the prelims to finish one spot behind McIntosh in 12th.
In the 800 free relay to close out Friday's finals action, the Northwestern team of Mathews, Nilsson, Cunnick and Daniel Walls (Tuscon, Ariz./Sabino) had an NCAA `B' cut of 6:33.71 to finish in sixth place.
