
Wildcats Seventh After Day One of NCAA Fencing Championships

MADISON, N.J. - Northwestern's women's fencing team is 12th after the first day of women's competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships. With five fencers at the Championship -- teams can have a maximum of six -- NU will try to crack the top-5 with a strong finish on the final day.
Freshman Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) sits in third place in epee with 11 victories (out of 14) and is strong position for tomorrow's medal rounds. Sister Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) is in 14th with six victories.
Sophomore Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) is sixth in the foil division with nine victories after the first day of competition. Fellow foilist and senior, Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School), is in 20th place with four victories.
In saber, senior Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) is 21st. She has three victories.
Penn State leads the women's division with 61 points. NU is seventh with 33.
