Charlottesville, Va. -- Northwestern held No. 11 Virginia scoreless in the first half, but the Cavs responded with three goals to begin the second and held off a Wildcats' charge to win 3-2 in Charlottesville on Thursday.

Northwestern (3-2) played aggressively early on, drawing five corners in the first eight minutes of the contest.

NU kept Virginia on its heels until the 37th minute when Biffy Cornelison scored off a penalty corner. The Cavs doubled the scored less than a minute later when Kaars Sijpesteijn registered a penalty corner to put Virginia up 2-0. Virginia added another goal less than two minutes later when Fenna Breitbarth found the back of the cage off a penalty corner.

At the 44:17 mark, Northwestern attacked up the left side of the field and penetrated the circle. The ball was batted around and knocked in by Elizabeth Dobbs (Wellesley, Mass./St. Ignatius (Calif.). It was the freshman's first career goal.

Senior forward Megan Sieberg (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) took an assist from Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and tallied her first goal of the season in the 51st minute to pull the 'Cats to within one, but that was as close as NU would get.

Virginia out-shot Northwestern, 21-10, but had nearly as many penalty corners, taking seven compared to the Cavs' eight.

The Wildcats meet American on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
