EVANSTON, Ill. - In Northwestern's first outdoor dual match of the season Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats came up just short in a grueling, four-hour, thirty-minute match against Tulane, 4-3. Northwestern drops to 6-7 overall, and remains at 1-2 in the Big Ten.

"I thought we adjusted very well to being outside," Head Coach Paul Torricelli said. "We out-competed them in a bunch of spots and had our chances, but just did not convert. I was proud of how well we played against one of the better outdoor teams. It was a great college match."

The Green Wave started the day by sweeping a 90-minute doubles session, in which all three matches were close.

But the `Cats shook off the doubles matches and came out firing in singles competition. Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) sparked NU with a straight-set win at No. 1, tying the team score 1-1. It was Hanus' 10th victory of the year, as he improved to 10-9 overall, 6-6 in duals.

Northwestern then took a 2-1 advantage off of sophomore Christian Tempke's (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium) win at No. 2. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Tempke grinded out the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 to earn his third-consecutive victory of the season. Tempke is 9-8 overall, with a 7-6 dual mark.

But Tulane eked out two close victories at No. 2 and 6 singles to regain the lead, 3-2.

Sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) earned his team-leading 10th dual victory of the year (10-3) with a tough win at No. 4 that featured two tiebreakers. Lock holds a team-best 16-7 overall record.

The Green Wave sealed the match by claiming the decisive victory at No. 5, improving to 9-3 on the year.

Northwestern is next in action at 16th-ranked Pepperdine Wednesday, March 23 and San Diego Friday, March 25.
