EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 20 Northwestern dropped its conference-opener at No. 19 Indiana Friday night by a score of 22-14. By winning five of the first six matches, the Hoosiers built an early 19-4 lead that the Wildcats could not come all the way back from.
Freshman Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward's) -- ranked No. 16 in the nation at 141 lbs. -- recorded the Wildcats first win of the match with a 10-1 major decision over Cameron Sakon. Lang is a flawless 8-0 in duals this year.
Freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) -- ranked No. 4 at 174 lbs. -- improved to 17-0 on his perfect year with a 12-10 decision over Brady Richardson. The Midlands Champion holds an 8-0 dual mark.
Freshman Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) -- ranked No. 15 at 184 lbs. -- scored yet another close victory on the season by defeating No. 18 Andy Rios, pulling the `Cats to within striking distance of the Hoosiers at 19-10.
Junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) -- ranked No. 15 at 197 lbs. -- pulled Northwestern even closer by smoking Josh Buck with a major decision victory, 15-4. Northwestern trailed 19-14 heading into the final match at heavyweight.
A Northwestern pin would have tied the score, but No. 4 Pat DeGain scored a decision against senior Scott Johnson (Kanab, Utah/Kanab) to seal the victory for the Hoosiers, 22-14.
The `Cats look to even their mark in the Big Ten tomorrow, Jan. 22 at Purdue.
