EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 20 Northwestern claimed its first Big Ten win in almost five years Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind. by defeating Purdue 27-10. The `Cats move to an even 1-1 in the conference and improve to 8-1 overall.

Northwestern last won a conference dual match on Jan. 28, 2000 with a 25-15 home victory against Ohio State.

Sophomore Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) set the tone in the opening match with a 4-0 decision over Sean Schmaltz at 133 lbs. Freshman Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward's) put the `Cats further ahead by pinning Jason Cook at the 50 second mark. It was Lang's team-leading sixth pin of the year and his 20th victory of the year.

Purdue battled back, earning a major decision at 149 lbs. to cut Northwestern's lead to 9-4. But the `Cats scored three-straight victories, bulking their lead up to 21-4. Senior Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara) recorded his team-leading 21st victory of the year with a 10-7 decision over Colton Salazar.

Sophomore Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) defeated John DeCeault 4-2, while the Boilermakers forfeited the match in freshman Jake Herbert's (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) 174-lb. weight class.

Purdue still would not go quietly though. Freshman Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) suffered a tough 4-2 defeat to the No. 12 ranked Ben Wissel at 184 lbs. before Nathan Moore scored the biggest upset of the day over junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) -- ranked 15th nationally at 197 lbs.

Down 21-10 heading into the final two matches, the Boilermakers needed a pair of pins to make a run at catching the Wildcats. But freshman Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) and junior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) were not about to let that happen.

Fox stepped up for Northwestern with a big win at the heavyweight position -- a weight class the `Cats have struggled to earn points in this year. The freshman defeated Jake O'Brien 5-2.

In the dual's finale, the 125-lb. Velez put the icing on the cake with a 10-4 victory over Brandon Tucker.

Northwestern returns home next weekend for a 7 p.m. bout against No. 8 Iowa Saturday, Jan. 29.
