EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Chuck Perrin's (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) singles win in Northwestern's final match against Western Michigan (1-2, 0-0) Monday afternoon broke his team's 3-3 tie with the Broncos to push the Wildcats to victory and a 2-0 record on the young season. Perrin had fallen in doubles action earlier in the day, but came up huge for the `Cats with his singles victory.
Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) also was stellar for the `Cats, winning in both singles and doubles. Hanus began the day by dominating his doubles match alongside junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine), as the duo made quick work of the Broncos' Bradshaw and Orozco for an 8-2 victory.
After Perrin and fellow-senior Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) fell 8-4, both squads looked to the No. 3 doubles match for the decisive team point. Sophomores Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother's Rice) delivered with an 8-5 win, giving Northwestern a 1-0 team advantage heading into singles competition.
The `Cats doubled up to a 2-0 lead after sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) finished Jeff French in straight sets at the No. 5 position. Lock's 6-4, 6-1 victory improved his record to 2-0 on the year.
Hanus moved Northwestern ahead even further, 3-0, by recording his first singles victory of the year. He defeated Jose Orozco at the No. 1 position 6-4, 7-5, putting an exclamation point at the end of the match by rifling an ace down the heart of the court.
But the Broncos came charging back on the strength of three-consecutive, straight-set victories of their own to knot the score at 3-3.
All eyes turned to Perrin and Tommy Dennis at the No. 2 position, as players from both teams took to the sidelines to cheer them on. With the other five matches in the books, Perrin and Dennis were only in the middle of their second set, tied 3-3. The pair had gone the distance and then some in their first set, with Perrin ultimately coming out on top, 7-6 (11), after a grueling tie-breaker.
In the second frame, Perrin held service to gain a 4-3 advantage, but Dennis did the same to tie it again at 4-4. Perrin then served his way to a 5-4 advantage, moving one game closer to an overall victory for the `Cats. He took advantage and broke Dennis' serve to seal the deal for Northwestern.
The `Cats are next in action Friday, Jan. 21 at Combe Tennis Center against Oklahoma.
