EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern suffered its first defeat of the season Friday night at the Combe Tennis Center, falling to Oklahoma 5-2. The Wildcats drop to 2-1 on the year, while the victory gives the Sooners a 1-0 start to their season.

Sophomores Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) began the evening with a victory at the No. 3 doubles position against Ivanov and Chavarria, improving to 2-0 on the year together.

But the `Cats dropped the remaining two doubles matches, as the Sooners took a 1-0 team advantage.

The No. 1 singles position featured a marquee matchup between senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), who was recently named Big Ten Athlete of the Week, and Mareck Velicka -- the reigning Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Singles Champion from the fall of 2004. In the opening set, both players held serve until the scoreboard read a 5-4 advantage for Velicka. The Sooner then broke Hanus in the next game to take the first frame 6-4.

Hanus returned the favor in the first game of the second set by breaking Velicka's serve, jumping ahead 1-0. He flipped the script and took the second frame 6-4.

The Palatine, Ill. native completed the comeback by grinding out a 6-4 win in the decisive set to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) recorded his team-leading third victory of the year with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tommy Garrison at the No. 5 position.

Oklahoma clinched the match as Lee Gregg defeated Christian 7-6, 6-3.

With the match in hand, the Sooners' Ondrej Fukala and senior Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) played a match tie-breaker to 10 points after the duo had split their first two sets. Perrin fell 10-4 in the tie-breaker.

The Sooners won four of six singles matches to improve to 3-0 all-time against the `Cats.

Northwestern is next in action Friday, Jan. 28 against Ball State at the Combe Tennis Center.
