WALTHAM, Mass. -- One down, one to go.

With the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships complete, Northwestern's women's fencing team checks in at sixth place with 31 points, led by foilist Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) and her eight wins.

"Sixth out of 25 is reasonable. For having just five fencers (the top-four teams each have six), we are doing well," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "All of our fencers got five or more wins today, and that is not bad. We just missed a few opportunities, losing close bouts that we could have won."

F?ldi, in her third-straight postseason appearance, had the best showing of all Wildcats by taking 10th in her weapon and having a +9 indicator. Squadmate Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) is close behind at 12th with seven wins and a +1 indicator. They trail Notre Dame's Alicja Kryczalo, the two-time defending champion, who currently has 13 wins and a +40 indicator.

In sabre, Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) won six bouts for a -6 indicator and a 15th-place standing. She precedes Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science), whose five wins and -12 indicator situate her at 18th.

Rounding out the quintet is Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), who picked up five wins and a -6 indicator for a 16th-place performance in epee.

"This is a very tough field--there aren't any easy bouts," said Schiller. "On the other hand, everyone from our team is pulling their weight. I think our fencers will do fine tomorrow, and that everyone has a shot at making All-America status (top 12 in each weapon)."

Team points are accumulated by individual wins. Defending champion Notre Dame is in first with 63 points, following by Ohio State (59), Penn State (48), Penn (43) and Columbia/Barnard (38).

Last year, Northwestern was in seventh after the first day of competition.

Indicators are calculated by touches scored minus touches received. They are the first tiebreaker in case two fencers have the same number of wins.
